Rendezvous with Remarkable
The story of the custom engagement ring designed and crafted exclusively for Nathan and Raena from across the country.
Their proposal moment required a journey of many miles. Everyone and everything needed was traveling from somewhere else to ultimately come together over 80 feet in the air in South Dakota on a chilly late December morning. The bride-to-be, Raena, traveling from Iowa State University where the couple first met. The groom-to-be, Nathan, traveling from his new job in another city. The item traveling the farthest was actually the engagement ring.
Nathan knew he wanted to surprise Raena with a truly special ring, but being busy with a new move and new job, he also knew that finding the time to work with a typical jeweler would be impossible. But the innovative approach of Dianna Rae Jewelry meant that he could be halfway across the country and still create something remarkable on his schedule using technology to collaborate on the design.
“Dianna and the design team were really helpful along the way. Working through email was really an intuitive process." recalls Nathan. With his education and background in architecture, he had some specific ideas on the design. And, with Raena studying interior design, he knew she would be sensitive to the form and structure. He continues "I would suggest an idea and Dianna would quickly email back some options. She was very helpful and very available even when I had to call her after work in the evenings to discuss design ideas.”
But knowing that he would not see the finished ring until it arrived ready for the big proposal obviously made Nathan a little nervous about his design choices. He continues “Any apprehension I had was helped by Dianna being so comforting. And knowing that she has so much experience in jewelry design, I trusted her.”
“Dianna and the design team were really helpful along the way.”
Once the finished ring arrived, Nathan was almost proposal ready. He just needed the right place and the right time. The place, he decided, would be the Christmas celebration at the farm in South Dakota that’s been in his family since 1885. And because he just couldn’t wait any longer, the time would be sunrise. Outside. In the cold. Over 80 feet in the air atop the grain storage bins at the farm.
Raena had been up there before with Nathan to enjoy the quiet and beautiful panoramic views of the South Dakota landscape. So even though the proposal was still a secret to her, she was willing when Nathan woke her up early in the morning and said “I’ve got hot coffee in a thermos and some blankets. Want to go see the sunrise?” After stopping during the climb at three landings where Nathan “gave Raena a different letter to read each time telling her how much I loved her.”, they finally reached the top where Nathan “got down on one knee and asked her to marry me.” The answer was yes.
Raena was also in love with her new ring. “The next day at a little one room country church, the light coming in through the stained glass was just gorgeous and hitting my ring. The light coming from my diamond was just shining everywhere. I could not take my eyes off of it!” she recalls. “All of my friends were jealous when they saw it. It was a huge hit with me and everybody else.”
The Dianna Rae Jewelry custom design experience was evident to Raena when she says “The design is beautiful. But I feel like if you would have picked a beautiful design out from a store, without the process behind it, it would not have meant as much. All of the details make this look different than jewelry that looks like it popped out of a machine.” Raena summarizes saying “I was telling someone about the ring and and how Nathan designed it himself and they said It’s more than just a ring; it’s his love for you. Planning a wedding can get crazy, but as long as Nathan and I have a solid foundation, everything will be OK. This ring reminds me of that every time I look at it.”
